My first experience of Budget week as a Member of Parliament was very interesting, and reminded me that Parliament is rich with history and ceremony. And it also cemented for me that there is an underlying sense of respect from Members of Parliament for the special nature of this place, and this contributes to the strong democracy we have in New Zealand. Budget 2012 is part of our consistent strategy to get our books back in order, and encourage strong economic growth for New Zealand.
A couple of weeks ago I attended a farmers seminar in Taumarunui which attracted some 200 people. It was great to see such a large turnout of farmers to a meeting in rural New Zealand. It reiterates the commitment and passion that New Zealand farmers are known for, and emphasises the interest in new knowledge that exists. Whilst in Taumarunui I was able to attend the funeral of Mr Jock Black, a very well-known ex member of the local Police, and a person who had dedicated a lot of his life to serving Taumarunui and the surrounding district. It is people like this that our smaller communities owe so much to.
One of the interesting roles I have in Parliament is serving on the Law and Order Committee. It is very pleasing to note the considerable drop in the number of prisoners, the number of people through the courts, and the number of crimes being reported. It is a trend that we intend to see continue. I am pleased to be a part of a Government that is helping to build safer communities, which New Zealanders can take pride in, and enjoy living in.
One last thing: My Taumarunui office is open on Monday from 9am-3pm and Thursday 9am-1pm, 1/101 Hakiaha Street, Kay is always happy to help you.
