Rangitikei District Monitor
Last Monday I was invited to Marton Junction School to present Duffy Books to pupils, and to tour the school and its very impressive facilities. It was the first time I had been back to Marton Junction School since playing rugby there in my primary school days, and I certainly enjoyed the hour or so I spent there with staff and pupils.
Last week I also spent some time at Turakina Maori Girls College, ensuring my understanding of their concerns about the future were up to speed. The school is in good hands, and while they need some governance support, the roll is increasing and they are a valuable part of the lower Rangitikei community.
Education has certainly attracted a lot of attention lately. We want all our kids to leave school with the skills they need to reach their potential in the modern economy. That means lifting up those who are being left behind, and encouraging those who are doing well to do even better.
Education Minister Hekia Parata is certainly passionate and determined to see our kids getting the best possible opportunity.
The Rangitikei electorate contains a large number of smaller schools. They are providing great educational opportunity to our families, often in difficult and isolated conditions. I have a great deal of admiration for all the schools in this electorate. In many instances they are the heart of our rural communities.
One last thing: My office in Marton certainly looks a little odd with its new Manchester United colour scheme!
